John James Audubon Birthday Celebrated by Google
Google is celebrating the 226th birthday of John James Audubon, the French-American ornithologist, artist, and naturalist with a special logo. Fitting that Google is honoring Audubon, considering that in his day Audubon had a Google-like mission to paint every bird species in North America (Google's mission today is, obviously, much larger: to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful).
Just as Audubon had a love of nature, Google also has been showing its "green" side, with massive investments in solar and wind energy. Google this year, as has been tradition for the past 10 years, also tried to raise awareness of the environment with a special Earth Day logo April 22.
Audubon made a major contribution to our knowledge of birds and is very worthy of this honor. The simple logo appears to be influenced by his bird paintings.
Audubon, born on April 26, 1785, was also well known for his paintings of 435 varieties of birds in "Birds of America." A complete copy of the first edition of "Birds of America" was sold in London, setting a record auction price -- £7,321,250 ($11.5 million) -- for a printed book on Dec. 6, 2010.
His life was dedicated to the painting, classifying, and descriptions of the birds of the world. Gathering information from as many sources as he could find, Audubon mapped the habitats of American birds.
This quote, attributed to Audubon, sums it up best: "I know that I am not a scholar, but meantime I am aware that no man living knows better than I do the habits of our birds."
The impact of his work can best be seen in the references to him in the works of Charles Darwin.
Apart from being the inspiration for The Audubon Society established in 1905, there are numerous towns, parks, and bridges throughout the U.S. bearing his name, including John James Audubon State Park in Kentucky.

Simbu not happy with his online fans
Simbu’s fans have started a campaign in the social networking sites like Facebook, Orkut and other sites claiming that they are happy for STR not accepting KO. His fans felt that KO has little scope of performance for the lead star and moreover the film had political hints. Silambarasan’s fan page is filled with their messages which have over a lakh fans.
STR says “I welcome fans comment but at the same time I don’t want my fans to talk bad about other actors or movies in my page. It’s purely the actor’s personal choice of accepting a film or not. I hail from the same industry and I always want all the movies to do well at the box office for the welfare of the industry”.
Besides this the actor is very happy as his film Vaanam is releasing coming Friday (April 29). Simbu’s home concern Kural TV Creations is distributing the film in Chennai.

Prithviraj got married to childhood friend Supriya
Prithviraj got married to childhood friend Supriya
Malayalam star Prithviraj Monday tied the knot with his childhood journalist friend Supriya Menon at a private function here.
"Just 30 people took part in the marriage ceremony. We decided to have a purely personal affair because in our family there are very aged people and they wanted it to be a solemn function, and hence we decided to make it a very private affair," Prithivraj's mother, actress Mallika Sukumaran, told media persons outside a resort, near the bride's residence here.
Denying it was a secret affair, she said: "They have been childhood friends and we have known each other for a very long time and there was nothing secretive in this."
Prithviraj's late father, Sukumaran was also an actor and created a special place for himself in the film industry through his dialogue delivery and subtle acting.
Mallika also told media persons that there would be two receptions - one on Saturday for family, and another the next day for the film fraternity.
Incidentally, Prithviraj had denied rumours and speculations of his impending marriage when he was in Thiruvananthapuram April 1 for a press meet after the release of his period film "Urumi".
Supriya, who is from Palakkad, is a journalist and worked as a BBC TV correspondent in Mumbai. She would come here once in a while to do special stories. Prithviraj hails from the capital city.
The 28-year-old actor made a successful debut with "Nandanam" and has starred in more than 50 films, including blockbusters like "Swapnakoodu" (2003), "Classmates" (2006), "Thirakkatha" (2008) and "Urumi" (2011).
His notable Tamil films are "Kana Kandaen" (2005) and "Mozhi" (2007).

Puyol, Milito fit for Clasico III
Puyol, Milito fit for Clasico III
Spain international Puyol missed the King's Cup final defeat to Real last week and Saturday's league victory over Osasuna with a muscle strain but returns for the third 'Clasico' in the space of 12 days.
Argentine centre-back Milito, who tweaked a muscle in the Cup final, also recovered but Brazilian fullback Maxwell missed out with a groin problem.
The return of the experienced duo gives coach Pep Guardiola options in defence where he has already lost Eric Abidal and Adriano Correia to injury.
With striker Bojan Krkic also sidelined, Guardiola called up youth team players Thiago Alcantara, Sergi Roberto and Martin Montoya to the squad.
Barca visit the Bernabeu on Wednesday and the second leg is at the Nou Camp on May 3.

United escape FA action for wall damage
A hole was kicked in the wall of the United dressing room after Manchester City had triumphed 1-0 and emergency repairs had to be carried out so the room could be used by Stoke City the following day.
There have been suggestions that the FA would send the repair bill to United or write to the club reminding them of their responsibilities.
But now, according to FA sources, a decision has been taken to let the matter lie.
It is also unlikely for there to be any disciplinary action for the incident at the end of the game when Rio Ferdinand and other United players were involved in an angry confrontation with Mario Balotelli.

Arsenal's Premier League title hopes suffered a crushing blow when they conceded a last-minute goal to lose 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers on Sunday.
Bolton substitute Tamir Cohen headed the winner, leaving Arsenal nine points behind leaders Manchester United with four games left and almost certainly ending their bid to claim a first trophy since 2005.
Arsenal went into the match on an unbeaten 16-game run but a succession of draws had allowed United, who beat Everton 1-0 on Saturday, to open a gap at the top of the table.
Manchester United maintained their six-point Premier League lead with a late header by Mexico striker Javier Hernandez on Saturday.
United, who visit Schalke 04 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday, have 73 points after the striker nicknamed Chicharito, or Little Pea, ended Everton's resistance six minutes from time at Old Trafford.
Chelsea remained in the hunt by beating West Ham United 3-0 at Stamford Bridge, with Fernando Torres finally getting off the mark in his 14th appearance for the champions.
Chelsea, who left West Ham bottom of the league, are second on 67.
Manchester City, who visit Blackburn Rovers on Monday, are fourth on 56 with fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur on 55 after they could only draw 2-2 at home with West Bromwich Albion.
Liverpool are only three points further back after thrashing Birmingham City 5-0 at Anfield, helped by a Maxi Rodriguez hat-trick.
Sunderland, who had taken just one point from their previous nine games, ended the dire run in emphatic style by beating Wigan Athletic 4-2 to ease their relegation worries.
Wolverhampton Wanderers against Fulham, Blackpool v Newcastle United and Aston Villa v Stoke City all finished 1-1.

Mancini pleased for 'good guy' Dzeko
Mancini threw the Bosnia international into the fray with 18 minutes remaining at Ewood Park and it took the former Wolfsburg ace just three minutes to make an impact, finishing past Paul Robinson from Phil Jones's attempted clearance.
It was his first goal for City since joining from the Bundesliga side in a £27 million deal during the January transfer window.
"I am sure it will help his confidence," Mancini said. "Edin is a fantastic striker.
"He had problems with not playing some games and had difficulties not scoring. But tonight he scored an important goal for us.
"He deserved to score as he is a good guy. It was not easy for him and because of this I will enjoy tonight."
The win saw City pull four points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham and move within five points of Arsenal in third, with a game in hand on the Gunners.
Mancini added: "With Carlos (Tevez) injured, Mario (Balotelli) played a fantastic game and with Edin scoring his first league goal it was very important.
"It was a very big win, especially as it was away from home, because at this stage every game is difficult. In the first half we played some great football and should have scored two goals.
"We scored in the second half when we had some problems because Blackburn played long ball. We found it difficult to play football but we deserved to win.
"Sometimes a top squad needs to find different ways to win and that's what we did."
Defeat for Blackburn left Steve Kean's side in real danger of dropping out of the top flight - Rovers remain just a point above the relegation zone with four to play.
Kean said: "I feel very hard done by. I don't like to moan about referees but we feel their goal was offside with Balotelli standing in front of Paul Robinson.
"We felt we had a good shout for a penalty for a bump on Niko (Kalinic) but he probably made it hard for the referee by staying on his feet.
"Full credit to the lads, none of them have anything left. If we continue to approach the games like that we will put points on the table."

Yuvraj accepts blame for Pune loss
Pune Warriors India captain Yuvraj Singh admitted that he should take the blame for not being able to finish the game as their team slumped to third defeat after CSK beat them by 25 runs at Chepaul today. Yuvraj played an uncharacteristic knock of 34 off only 43 balls.
"It's difficult to come back once you are four down inside the first six overs. I should also take a lot of blame for not being able to finish the match. This has happened for the third time now that I have started off well but couldn't finish off the match," Yuvraj said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
The Warriors skipper however didn't regret the decision to bowl first. "I have no regrets for opting to field first.
Our bowlers Jerome (Taylor), Rahul (Sharma) and Alfonso (Thomas) bowled. I believed that 143 was not that big a score."
Yuvraj's counterpart Mahendra Singh Dhoni was happy that his team was back to winning ways.
"This was very important win for us. We can't afford to lose too many games in a row. Hopefully, we can continue the winning momentum," he said.
Asked whether he is an instinctive captain or does a lot of planning, the Indian captain said that he does not believe in too much of planning.
"I don't do too much of planning. I don't attend bowlers' meetings. I believe every wicket is different, every situation is different. I always go without any pre-planned ideas in the mind. It helps me. Our bowlers generally do have a meeting but I don't attend them. As it may just restrict my decisions."
The skipper lauded his fielders who made a modest total look even more difficult.
"We didn't have too many runs on the board. The fielders did an exceptional job and the total of 142 now looks like 155 which was difficult total on this track."
Man of the match Michael Hussey's assessment was that the pitch was on the slower side.
"It certainly was a lot slower than Bangalore. We had to make adjustments quickly. The fielding was outstanding. We had a just-below-par score. Everytime we wanted to kick on, we lost a wicket, but that was the nature of the wicket. We just wanted to try and take it as deep as possible."

Brilliant fielding helped our bowlers: Fleming
Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming lauded the effort of his bowlers and fielders which helped his team carve out a fantastic 25-run win over Pune Warriors.
"We would look to replicate this standard of fielding in our coming matches. Today, we were desperate to win. This kind of fielding helps the bowler to be a bit more confident and gives the skipper much more confidence to dictate the game.
"We need to keep improving in that area. We were embarrassed with our fielding in the last game and we were desperate to make the difference," Fleming said at the post-match press conference.
Fleming admitted that his team was 15 runs short of the par-score.
"We knew it was a below par score. Since our best players were struggling on that track, we felt it would be a tough score to attain."
The former New Zealand captain said that his boys were successful in increasing the pressure as the match progressed.
"We knew we had to bowl and field well. We increased the pressure on the rival batsmen as the match progressed. When they were scoring at six runs an over, we knew we had a good chance to win the match."
Jesse Ryder's wicket was the key as if the Kiwi batsman would have got a few big hits, it would have set the platform for Yuvraj to consolidate.
"If Jesse Ryder got going that would have created a platform for Yuvraj. Then it would have been difficult. Our idea was to take early wickets and the fielders complemented the bowlers well."
Fleming termed Ravichandran Ashwin as a transformed bowler after his stint with the victorious Indian team.
"He has always been a match-winner for us. He is always a confident bowler and transforms himself well as he takes wickets. He is working hard on improving his strengths.
"The last four months in international cricket had really made him more matured. Ashwin is an asset. His variations always help him like the manner in which he dismissed Jesse Ryder with his arm ball today."
Fleming defended Murali Vijay who has often failed to convert his good starts during the tournament.
"Vijay is in a situation where he is providing us the platform to push the pace. He understands the situation pretty well. Vijay is one of our key players. He needs to get big score and we have faith in him that he will get a big score."

Uthappa heaps praise on Chennai fielding
Uthappa heaps praise on Chennai fielding
Pune Warriors batsman Robin Uthappa blamed his team's 25-run defeat against Chennai Super Kings on the early loss of wickets and some superb fielding by the rival side.
"CSK fielded out of their skin and credit must be given to them. When we batted, we lost two wickets — Pandey and myself in quick succession. That pushed us back pretty badly. We needed to build a partnership," rued the burly Karnataka batsman.
"Chennai Super Kings played exceedingly well and the 20 25 runs in the end overs was crucial for us. We batted badly but bowled and fielded well," he said.
Uthappa defended Yuvraj Singh's decision to field first.
"Taking into consideration that we won matches chasing and coming from back-to-back defeats, we wanted to stay in that zone. That was the reason why we put them in," he reasoned.
"Unfortunately, we lost the game today but nothing is lost and we will be winning the next matches."
Uthappa admitted that there is room for improvement in all three departments of the game.
"We want to up our game in all three departments. Our batsmen have their task cut out. We still have nine matches to go. We will definitely peak at the right time," the dashing batsman said.
Questioned whether humidity was a factor, "New stadium does not make us feel that way. There is a lot more breeze blowing."
Uthappa didn't rule out the fatigue factor for senior Indian players as they are coming back from World Cup. He termed the Chepauk pitch as "difficult for batting."

Haynes appointed West Indies batting consultant
Desmond Haynes, the former West Indies batsman, has been appointed batting consultant to the national team for their home series against Pakistan. Haynes will work under head coach Ottis Gibson during the one-off Twenty20 international, five one-dayers and two Tests, after which the West Indies Cricket Board will search for a full-time batting coach.
Haynes was part of the West Indies camp in Barbados last week. "I have always said I wanted to be involved in West Indies cricket and help in any way I could," he said. "This is a chance to help the young players with their development. I just want to see the players get better as we aim for improvement at all levels in West Indies cricket, and get the team back to the halcyon days."
There are several inexperienced players in West Indies' squad for Haynes to work with, after the board chose to leave out Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul for the first two one-dayers and include Lendl Simmons and Kirk Edwards. The squad also contains 22-year-old Darren Bravo.
Since retiring from cricket, Haynes has worked mainly in administration, and was a WICB director as well as head of the selection committee. His latest assignment was as manager of Barbados for the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament. He said he was happy to be working in the coaching department.
"I am happy to be part of the team management unit, headed by Ottis, and I believe I can also help the players with the mental aspect of their game and the way they go about their cricket in general."
West Indies' decision to opt for a batting consultant comes after their opponents in the upcoming series convinced Javed Miandad to work with their batsmen.
According to the WICB, Haynes has worked with South Africa allrounder Jacques Kallis, batsman Herschelle Gibbs and young West Indies batsman Darren Bravo among other international cricketers.
West Indies arrive in St Lucia on Monday ahead of the Twenty20 match against Pakistan, which is on April 21.

Ahmed Shehzad ton secures 2-0 lead
Ahmed Shehzad ton secures 2-0 lead
Unlike the island on which this match was played - St Lucia - the cricket was not arresting at the Beausejour Stadium. The stands were sparsely populated, the outfield patchy and the West Indian batsmen once again failed to combat Pakistan's spinners, their ineptness at reading variations making the contest a mismatch. Pursuing a middling target, Pakistan's only fault was their crawl in the first half of their chase, raising fleeting hopes of a competitive finish. Ahmed Shehzad prevented any such thing, his century securing a seven-wicket victory and a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
For the briefest of whiles West Indies, spurred by Lendl Simmons, were making a more spirited effort in this game compared to their struggle in the first. Simmons, however, had no support as his team-mates either flickered and perished, or struggled to rotate the strike. Pakistan stacked up dot balls as Simmons looked on, and his dismissal for 51 was the beginning of the unraveling of the West Indian challenge. Eight of their first nine batsmen made it to double figures, but only three got past 20.
Pakistan's first break was a fortunate one. Devon Smith was struck on the pad outside off stump by Hafeez while playing off the back foot but umpire Asoka de Silva thought otherwise. While Simmons was batting with Darren Bravo, though, the signs were promising for West Indies. They were 53 for 1 after the mandatory Powerplay.
Ajmal had bowled without deserved reward in the first one-dayer. He had teased and beaten Darren Bravo in that game. There was none of that today. Ajmal pitched his first ball just outside leg and spun it across the left-hander. Darren Bravo attempted to cut, and edged to first slip.
Marlon Samuels then dragged West Indies into the mire. The run-rate plummeted after he entered, as only 14 runs came off the bowling Powerplay. Simmons tried to counter by launching Shahid Afridi out of the ground over midwicket and then charging and hitting Junaid Khan for a straight six. Samuels, however, had scored only 3 off 36 and Simmons felt the need to attack some more. Soon after reaching his half-century, Simmons drove Afridi to short cover, where Umar Akmal parried the ball above his head and caught the rebound.
