The world number one, beaten in four finals this year by Djokovic, including two on clay, has spent the build-up relaxing with his family and friends and is looking no further than his first round match against American John Isner.
"I stopped a few days (after losing to Djokovic in the Rome Masters final last Sunday)," the left-handed Spaniard said at Roland Garros on Friday. "I played some golf at home. I have been visiting the family."
"Since Indian Wells it was a very busy schedule for me, you know, and I was visiting the grandparents and small cousins, all the uncles," added Nadal, who has lost just one match in his six years at the French Open and is one title away from equalling the six collected by Bjorn Borg.
"I tried to have one dinner with the friends, because I didn't see the friends at all since two months or three months. Just tried to be close to them, my people, for a few days."
Nadal takes on big-serving Isner and while he should devour the American on his favourite clay, he is taking nothing for granted. He is certainly not yet contemplating another clash with man-of-the-year Djokovic on June 5.
"Seriously, I am thinking about Isner," he said.
"Thinking about Djokovic right now would be a big, big mistake, because I don't know if I'm going to ever play this match in this tournament.
"(Isner's) style of game is dangerous. His serve is unbelievable. He can be very dangerous. We will see. I have to be focused all the time."
If he is to reach the final Nadal would possibly have to go past Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the third round, fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the fourth and Swede Robin Soderling, the only man to beat him at Roland Garros, in the quarter-finals and Roger Federer in the last four.

Watch out for Azarenka on clay

I think Victoria Azarenka has looked as if everything is clicking together - although it is still a bit too soon to be looking ahead to her chances at Roland Garros.

The French Open is so much about form and how the claycourt season evolves week by week by week and there's a lot of time between now and then.

But for me Azarenka is definitely the one to watch heading into this claycourt season, despite her retirement with a shoulder niggle in Stuttgart last week.

If I had to pick a winner for the French Open right now, and not Kim Clijsters, it would be Azarenka.

I would say that Clijsters is a bit like Serena Williams in that she doesn't need any practice to do well in a Grand Slam. If she comes in to Roland Garros undercooked and unprepared but fit, for me she is the favourite to win it. If she's not fit or doesn't play then it's wide open.

It was great to see Agnieszka Radwanska playing well in Stuttgart again. She played really well and beat Francesca Schiavone easily.

It didn't look as though the spark was there for Schiavone. She was obviously trying very hard and there was no sense that she had lost her 100 per cent commitment approach but it definitely looked like the spark had gone and Radwanska just mopped her up.

When Schiavone won the French Open last year I thought it was going to be a one-off thing but she surprised me after that as she continued to play really well. She played some unbelievable tennis, especially in Australia this year. It was incredible from someone who had achieved her dream and could have been on a swansong for a year.

And so up until about two weeks ago I thought she had a genuine chance of doing it again on clay this year, of defending her title at Roland Garros, because there was no other real favourite and because she has the form and the experience and the talent.

And yet that seems to have coincided with this lack of form. So as we speak right now the jury is out. There is still time for her to get her form back but it looks at though she is going in the wrong direction.

You can never count out Caroline Wozniacki of course. She is playing a little bit more inconsistently than we've seen before but she reached the final in Stuttgart and you can never write her off even though she's never won a Slam and that will be a topic of conversation again the nearer we get to Roland Garros.

I'm not sure about Vera Zvonarea. I see her once again as the nearly person, playing well throughout - but I don't see her as the winner of Roland Garros in a month's time.

Sam Stosur reached the final at Roland Garros last year and the semi-final the year before but her confidence has completely gone this year. It's all mental for her and it can come back in a rush.

So I wouldn't write her off but what I would say about Sam is that whenever the pressure has been at its highest, whether it's the Fed Cup, the Australian Open or the final of the French Open, she has struggled and she's struggled consistently.

Until she proves us wrong, you'd have to think that that's going to happen again. I can't see a repeat of those hurrahs once again from Sam this year.

Of course it could be like last year when someone comes from nowhere to dominate the season - Julia Goerges was fantastic in Stuttgart last week. It might well be that someone comes through unheralded but hits big form at just the right time.

Gajdosova reaches quarters in Estoril

Gajdosova, competing under her maiden name once again after the breakdown of her marriage, needed just 69 minutes to book her place in the last eight as she eased to a 6-2 6-4 win over Dellacqua.
The 24-year-old, who broke her opponent's serve six times, will face Monica Niculescu in the next round, after the Romania posted a 6-4 6-4 win over American qualifier Sloane Stephens.
Top seed Alisa Kleybanova also progressed to the quarter-finals despite being forced to recover from a set down before beating Frenchwoman Mathilde Johansson 5-7 6-3 6-2.
The Russian dropped her serve an incredible 10 times before eventually battling past Johansson in just over two-and-a-half hours.
Awaiting Kleybanova in the last eight is Kristina Barrois, the German dispatching sixth seed Elena Vesnina 6-4 6-3.
Greta Arn, the eighth seed, also departed the tournament as she was forced to retire whilst trailing Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-2 1-0.
Claycourt specialist Medina Garrigues will take on third seed Klara Zakopalova in the last eight, the Czech player recovering from a sluggish start to beat Belarussian qualifier Anastasiya Yakimova 2-6 6-4 6-1.
The final quarter-final will be contested between Russian Alla Kudryavtseva and Johanna Larsson, both of whom progressed in straight sets. Kudryavtseva needed a second set tie-break to beat Romina Oprandi of Italy 6-4 7-6(3) while Swede Larsson beat Urszula Radwanska 6-4 6-4.

Petzschner downs Youzhny in Munich

Petzschner broke Youzhny's serve three times as he booked his place in the last eight much after two hours and 16 minutes to the delight of the home fans.
Only two other matches were completed on a rain-interrupted day with Potito Starace booking a place opposite Petzschner after a 6-4 6-2 win over sixth seed Sergiy Stakhovsky.
Bulgarian teenager Grigor Dimitrov produced a thrilling comeback when he saved two match points to shock fourth seed Marcos Baghdatis 3-6 7-6(6) 6-2.
Dimitrov trailed by a set and 6-4 in the second set breaker before reeling off four straight points to snatch the set and then going off to seal the match.
"It was a great match, especially when I won it in the end," Dimitrov told the ATP World Tour website.
"It's just an unbelievable feeling. I was two match points down and I found a way to get back up right away and turn the match in a way that I really wanted to.
Fifth seeded Florian Mayer's match against Teimuraz Gabashvili was postponed until Thursday due to the persistent rain.

Soderling sets up Del Potro clash

After a brilliant start to the season when he won 18 out of his first 19 matches, the Swedish world number five has won just two matches in his last three tournaments and needed nearly two hours to battle past Chardy.
Sodering enjoyed two incredibly dominant sets in his first match in Portugal; as top seed he received a bye into the second round.
Unfortunately for Soderling those two sets were interrupted by a lapse in concentration, with Chardy leading 4-1 in the second set before the Swede bounced back to force the decider.
Soderling will face another stiff challenge in the last eight when he comes up against Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro.
Eighth seed Del Potro, returning to form after an injury-riddled 2010, eased past Colombia's Alejandro Falla 6-2 6-1 in 71 minutes.
Del Potro, who dropped just six points on serve against Falla, enjoys a 3-1 head-to-head record against Soderling, including a straight sets victory over the Swede at the Miami Masters last month.
Third-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, awarded a wildcard into the tournament, was sent packing after a 6-2 7-6(0) loss to Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas.
Awaiting Cuevas in the last eight is Thomaz Bellucci, the Brazilian winning an epic encounter with Argentine Euouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3 5-7 7-5 in two hours and 58 minutes.

Djokovic stretches unbeaten run

The 23-year old Serb, who was given a first-round bye in the tournament organised by his family, looked rusty at times in his first match since he won the Miami Masters on April 3 and dropped serve twice in light drizzle on a windy evening.
Coming off an impressive run in which he also captured the Australian Open, the Dubai Championships and the Indian Wells Masters, Djokovic hit just one ace and only 59 per cent of his first serves.
Having raced into a 3-0 lead in the opening set, the home crowd favourite allowed world number 175 Ungur to make it 3-2 with a break of serve before he moved up a gear and won six of the next seven games.
The Serb hit several trademark winners in the closing stages of the second set, drawing a warm round of applause from around 4,000 fans who turned up at Belgrade's tennis complex built by the banks of Danube River.
Djokovic, who won the inaugural tournament in 2009 but retired in the early stages last year with illness, will meets Blaz Kavcic for a semi-final berth, after the Slovenian beat Ricardo Mello of Brazil 7-5 6-3.
Fourth seed Albert Montanes also booked his place in the last eight, being forced to recover from a set down to beat Michael Berrer 3-6 6-2 6-2, and will next face Feliciano Lopez, after the Spaniard beat Fernando Gonzalez 6-4 7-6(4).
